Scene 1

Virat wakes up with a pounding headache. Amruta gently brings a wet cloth to tend to his face. He pulls away, “Just leave me alone,” he says. She insists, “Let me clean your wound.” With a half-hearted smile, he jokes, “I know you did this… you’re just jealous of my handsome face. You’ll pay for it. I’ll tell my mom; she loves me so much she’ll do anything for me.” His voice falters as he continues, “She could do anything.”

Amruta, noticing his pain, asks, “Does it hurt?” He sighs, “The strange thing is, I can’t feel anything. I’m in pain, but somehow, I can’t feel it.” She offers softly, “You can talk to me, it might help.” He shakes his head, “Let me be in this state of sadness. I did the same to you, so why do you care about me?” She replies, “Because you’ve done a lot for me. I remember when my family had no place to go, and even though we fought, every time I was in pain, you would show up, and we’d argue. Those fights helped me forget my pain for a while.”

He frowns, “That’s not something to be proud of. I fought with you too much… I ruined your life. When my mom told me everything, I believed her without a second thought because the evidence was against you. I never stopped to ask for your side. All I wanted was to punish you, and in that crazed state, I forced you into this marriage. It was wrong; it was a disgusting thing to do. I’ve hurt you, and I know that.” He grabs her hand, eyes filled with regret, “I promise, every time I hurt you, it hurt me more. It tore me apart to see you suffer. I knew I was wrong, but I kept going. You didn’t deserve any of it. I made you cry; I caused you so much pain. I got those papers because I needed to know if there was anything left between us. I wanted to set you free.”

Amruta interrupts, “No—” He cuts her off gently, “I’m drunk, so let me ramble. You know I talk too much when I’m like this, just like you.” She chuckles softly. He continues, “When you accused my mom, I didn’t believe you, not even for a second. When she said you threw her in front of a truck, I didn’t completely believe it either, but I still didn’t trust you. That’s on me, I’m sorry. It was all my fault. I should’ve trusted her, but…”

Amruta interjects, “You had to trust her; she’s your mother.” Tears fill Virat’s eyes as he admits, “I trusted her with everything. I didn’t listen to anyone but her. And now, finding out the truth, it’s breaking me. Why would my mom do this to me? Why would she lie to me about everything—the accident, the wounds, all of it? I trusted her the most.” Amruta, empathetically, says, “I know.” Virat, his voice cracking, asks, “You knew, and still, you stayed with me? Why?”

She replies, “Because I needed to prove my innocence.” Virat sighs, “And you did. I’m so sorry. I can’t even say you should have told me because you did—over and over again—but I was too blind to see it. How could I go against my mom? I blamed you, cursed you, all for her. Why did she do this? Why would a mother do this? Maybe it’s because I wasn’t a good son… maybe I’m not a good person, and that’s why this happened to me.”

Amruta gently refutes, “No… does that make me a bad person? My father threw me out of his house—does that mean I’m evil?” He shakes his head, “No.” Virat then asks, “You must have felt terrible when you found out about your father’s affair, right? My mom betrayed me, and your dad betrayed you. I guess that puts us on the same level now. We’re both victims of betrayal.” Amruta, trying to steer the conversation away, says, “Don’t bring this up when you’re drunk.”

She stands, ready to leave. “I’m going home. Dildar must be missing me.” Virat, still playful despite his sadness, pulls her back and teases, “He’s my dad; he misses me more.” She smiles, “No, he misses me more. I have to go.” She starts to walk away, but he pulls her close again and says, “Maybe you’re right. He might miss you more because you’re the most missable person I know.” She giggles at the word “missable,” and just then, Harsh announces, “Ayi is coming!” Amruta quickly runs off.

Scene 2

Bebe confronts Babita and Kavita, “You kept everything hidden from me!” Babita, unapologetic, retorts, “So what? I couldn’t let that lowly girl become my daughter-in-law.” Bebe shakes her head, “But you forgot about your son in all this.” Kavita adds, “Bebe is right. We made a mistake, and now Amruta will take advantage of it.” Babita snaps, “Stop reminding me of my mistakes!”

Just then, the servant enters, “Virat is here.” Bebe, determined, says to Babita, “Let bygones be bygones. We need to get Virat on our side, no matter what. We can’t let Amruta win.”
